THOUSAND TRAILS: VERDE VALLEY |

If a picture is worth a thousand words, as the saying goes, then capturing a trip to the ruggedly beautiful high desert of Arizona requires several rolls of film to begin to describe the experience. From the Papago Indian word "Arizonac," Arizona means "place of the small spring." The Grand Canyon rises from one such “small spring." Nestled along another, the Verde River, is the Verde Valley preserve.
Situated about 45 miles southwest of Flagstaff, Verde Valley rests below the Black Hills to the west and the Red Rocks of Sedona to the north. Other nearby mountains and striated rock outcroppings create stunning vistas all around. Locals say fishing along the river is great, with yellow and channel catfish, smallmouth and largemouth bass, trout, bluegill, and sunfish in abundance, depending on the season.
A full-time preserve, yet a little isolated, Verde Valley is an ideal stop on a cross-country trek (say, between your favorite Texas destinations and the plentiful West Coast parks). Once you arrive, you can forget your worries, because the park staff will make you feel right at home.
