Visit the many historical landmarks such as Pompey’s Pillar 30 miles east of Billings. This rock outcropping rises to 200 feet above the Yellowstone River. Look for signs of past occupations on the rock face such as animal drawings created by people who used the area for rendezvous, campsites, and hunting. Also see the carved signature and date of Captain William Clark, the only visible evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition along this trail. Pictograph Cave State Park contains more than 2100-year-old pictographs of animals, warriors, and even rifles. The three caves (Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost) form a complex that was home to generations of prehistoric hunters which tell stories of their past, and about 30,000 artifacts consisting of stone tools, weapons, paintings, and used instruments have been identified from the site.
